(701) 588-4541 Dienstglas • Military and Naval Binoculars

x 6×30 (beh – rln)

This is a list of serial numbers, observed in collections and recorded from sources online, of German 6×30 binoculars manufactured from 1933 to 1945, marked as equipment of the German Armed Forces during World War II.

The German “General Army News” of October 7, 1939 contains information about Dienstglas serial numbers, referring to 6×30 Dienstglas of Hensoldt u. Söhne, Mechanisch-Optische Werke AG, Wetzlar (bmj) to production number 383621, of Optische Anstalt Oigee, Berlin-Schöneberg (dzl) to production number 21651, and of Optische Werke G. Rodenstock, München (eso) to production number 203501, thereby establishing serial numbers of at least these three manufacturers up to October 7, 1939.

Definitions — Essential Basic Information

Doppelfernrohr
(literally “double telescope”)
D.F. or
DF
Doppelfernrohr (literally “double telescope”) — “binoculars” — was marked in weißer Schrift (white letters “D.F.” or “DF”) on Dienstglas manufactured before and during World War II.
Strichplatte (Reticle) m or
MH/6400
Strichplatte (reticle) range finding scale, measured in millimeters, was often built into the right prism of a Dienstglas, and marked on the right prism cover by “m” or “M” followed by “H/6400” in weißer Schrift (white letters).

The letter “m” or “M” (indicating millimeters) preceded the designation “H/6400” (indicating that the millimeter scale is graduated into 6400 segments measured in mils).

Between 1938 and 1939, the “m” or “M” was discontinued, and only the “H/6400” was retained to show that a Strichplatte (reticle) range finding scale was built into a particular Dienstglas.

The “m” or “M” preceding “H/6400” is often confused with the capital letter “M” marked beneath or near the Nazi Eagle symbol that identifies property of the German Marine (Navy).

The term reticle (from Latin, rēticulum, a little net) describes a network of fine lines etched within the focal plane of an optical instrument, and used to measure the size or position of objects under observation.

Another term for reticle is graticule, first encountered in British military technical manuals of World War I, and currently in British publications and web sites.

Schwarz leder oder Vulkanite Körperbedeckung Black leather or “Vulkanite” (a synthetic, leather-like, early form of plastic) was used as a body covering on Dienstglas manufactured before World War II. Early in the war, a black “rice” body covering (black paint mixed with crushed rice to give a rough body texture) also became a common Dienstglas body finish.

As wartime material shortages and minimal manufacturing techniques went into effect, paint alone became the prominent Dienstglas body covering, notably the use of dark gray paint and Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint from September 1943 to the end of the war.

Sandgelb was ordered to be used on new optical equipment made after September 1943, and existing optics were also ordered to be repainted with the new sand yellow color.

Sellers on eBay often erroneously claim the Sandgelb sand yellow color to be somehow related to the German Afrika Korps.

Brass, Aluminum, and Bakelite Brass was a common metal used in Dienstglas construction before World War II, but was quickly replaced by aluminum as wartime material shortages became apparent. Toward the end of the war, even Presstoff (Bakelite) was used as a Dienstglas production material.
Okularshutz (eye piece protector) or Regenschutzdeckel (rain protection cover) or Benutzerkappe (user cap) An Okularshutz (eye piece protector) is an oval lens shield placed over Dienstglas rear lenses to keep out rain and dirt. Usually made of Leder (leather), Presstoff (Bakelite), or Gummi (rubber), the device was attached to the Dienstglas carrying strap, or by a fabric covered spring system attached to the Dienstglas spindle.

The Okularshutz (eye piece protector) is also referred to as a Regenschutzdeckel (rain protection cover) or a Benutzerkappe (user cap) for rear lenses.

Anknöpflasche (button flap) In the German armed forces, in addition to the leather neck strap, an Anknöpflasche (leather button flap) could be connected through the front spindle of the Dienstglas for attachment to a jacket button to keep the Dienstglas from bouncing and swinging while running. The button flap is often found attached to German WW II Dienstglas, especiallly the light in weight 6x30s.
Presstoff (Bakelite) Before and during World War II, Presstoff (Bakelite), an early form of plastic, was used in the manufacture of Dienstglas carrying cases, bayonet handles, pilot goggles, field telephones, water bottles, storage boxes, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, and hundreds of other items of military equipment.

Bakelite (/ˈbeɪkəlaɪt/ BAY-kə-lyt, sometimes spelled Baekelite[3]), or polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, is an early plastic. It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. It was developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1907.

Cold resistant greases K.F. or
KF
K.F. or KF — Kälte Fett — referred to the cold resistant grease “Invarol” that was marked in weißer Schrift (white letters “K.F”. or “KF”) on Dienstglas manufactured (or returned to repair facilities for maintenance, repair, or regreasing) during 1940 and 1941.
O O — Vakuumfett 1416 — referred to the cold resistant grease “Vacuum” that was marked with a hellblaue Kreis (light blue circle “O”) during 1942.
+ + — Instrumentenfett 1442 — referred to the cold resistant grease “Instrument Grease 1442” that was marked with a hellblaue Kreuz (light blue cross “+”) during 1942 and 1943.
Δ Δ — referred to the cold resistant grease of an unknown name that was marked with a hellblaue Dreieck (light blue triangle “Δ”) during 1943 to 1945.

“Manipulated” Forgery
This Dienstglas (“cag” 6×30, 79677) is a “manipulated” forgery. Here is an example of a genuine Dienstglas, manufactured by the firm of Daniel Swarovski Tirol, Wattens, Tyrol, Österreich (“cag”), that was originally manufactured with a black “rice” body covering, and more recently has been intentionally manipulated (stripped to bare metal and painted) to portray instead a “Dienstglas” with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.
cag : 79677
mfg. about 19xx

“Δ” : 1943 – 1945

Original : Black “rice” body covering, aluminum fittings, black Bakelit (Bakelite) rear lens fittings, left prism cover marked “cag” over “Δ” (blue, filled in, cold resistant grease marking, 1943 – 1945), right prism cover marked “Dienstglas” over “6×30” over “79677” over “H/6400” Strichplatte (reticle), black leather Trageriemen (carrying strap), black Bakelit (Bakelite) Okularshutz (eye piece protector) or Regenschutzdeckel (rain protection cover) or Benutzerkappe (user cap) for rear lenses.

Manipulated Forgery : This Dienstglas (“cag” 6×30, 79677) should be black. Originally manufactured with a black “rice” body covering, the body of this service glass has since been stripped to bare metal, then painted with a modern application of Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint, and intentionally distressed to look deceptively old and well used in active military service.

It is true that in September 1943, the standard Reichsluftfahrt Ministerium (German Ministry of Aviation) listed paint, RLM-79, SANDGELB (sand-yellow), was designated einheitsfarbe Europa (single color Europe), and was ordered to be used on all military equipment of the German armed forces, including tanks, trucks, other vehicles, artillery, and all kinds of smaller equipment, including Dienstgläser, and other optical equipment. However, this does not appear to be the case with this particular service glass (“cag” 6×30, 79677).

In this clearly documented case, the photographic evidence of obvious, blatant modern manipulation emphatically and conclusively hammers the nail of intentional deception firmly into the coffin of stark reality. This Dienstglas (“cag” 6×30, 79677) is a manipulated forgery.

Also, no longer included are the original black leather Trageriemen (carrying strap) and black Bakelit (Bakelite) Okularshutz (eye piece protector) or Regenschutzdeckel (rain protection cover) or Benutzerkappe (user cap) for the rear lenses.

“cag” 6×30, 113764
“Assembled” Forgery
This Dienstglas (“cag” 6×30, 113764) is an “assembled” forgery. Here is an example of a fake service glass portrayed as a genuine Dienstglas manufactured by the firm of Daniel Swarovski Tirol, Wattens, Tyrol, Österreich (“cag”). The true manufacturer of this fake military service glass — Meopta – optika, s.r.o. of the Czech Republic — has never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.
cag : 113764

“Δ” : 1943 – 1945

Original : Black “rice” body covering, aluminum fittings, black Bakelit (Bakelite) rear lens fittings, left prism cover marked “cag” over “Δ” (blue, filled in, cold resistant grease marking, 1943 – 1945), right prism cover marked “Dienstglas” over “6×30” over “113764” over “H/6400” Strichplatte (reticle).

Assembled Forgery :  The real manufacturer of this fake military service glass is Meopta – optika, s.r.o. of the Czech Republic — formerly called Waffenwerke Brünn (Brno), Prerau (Přerov) plant, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, renamed ‘Opticotechna GmbH, Werk Prerau / Protektorat’ in 1943 (“dow”). The modern Meopta original black “rice” body covering has been removed, and the bare metal then painted with a modern version of Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint. The modern Meopta prism covers have been replaced by what appear to be genuine World War II “cag” prism covers to complete the deception.

This Dienstglas (“cag” 6×30, 113764) should be black. Originally manufactured with a black “rice” body covering, which has since been stripped and removed, the bare metal was then painted with a modern application of Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint, and intentionally distressed to look deceptively old and well used in active military service. With its new Sandgelb (sand yellow) color, this Dienstglas stands glaringly out of place when compared with other documented black Dienstgläser within its serial number range.

The straight carrying strap attachments seen here on this modern Meopta body (a dead giveaway) are very different from the rectangular loops of genuine German service glasses of World War II. Different also are the Bakelit (Bakelite) rear lens fittings — the modern Meopta rear lens fittings are straighter than the slightly more flared rear lens fittings of genuine German service glasses of World War II. To the experienced eye, the photographic evidence is conclusive. This Dienstglas (“cag” 6×30, 113764) is an assembled forgery.

However, this does not appear to be the case with this particular service glass (“cag” 6×30, 113764).

During World War II, Waffenwerke Brünn (Brno), Prerau (Přerov) plant, Moravia, Czechoslovakia (renamed ‘Opticotechna GmbH, Werk Prerau / Protektorat’ in 1943) — “dow” — never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body. Now, more than 70 years after the end of World War II, Meopta – optika, s.r.o., Kabelikova 1, 750 02 Přerov, Czech Republic, the modern manufacturer of this fake military service glass (“cag” 6×30, 113764), also has never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.

200252  + Black “Vulkanite” body covering, brass fittings, left prism cover blank, right prism cover marked “Dienstglas” over “6×30” over “200252” over “cxn” and “+”. This Dienstglas is not marked “H/6400” but has a reticle. A different serial number “200141” is stamped on the lower side of the left front bridge support, and “U 41” is stamped on the bridge spindle front button. Originally, this Dienstglas may have been marked with the “BUSCH” logo on the left prism cover (“cxn” being the wartime code of the Emil Busch firm of Rathenow). During the war, this Dienstglas was repaired / rebuilt / regreased, resulting in the left prism cover being replaced with a blank one, and the right prism cover receiving the “+” cold resistant grease marking. The “U 41” marking may mean this Dienstglas was Umgebaut (reworked / rebuilt) in 1941, resulting in the two serial numbers “200141” and “200252”. cxn : 201063

no s/n This is a monocular version of the 6×30 Dienstglas (service glass) made of a reddish brown Bakelit (Bakelite). The only marking is “6×30” on top of the housing. Probably the monocular is just the half of a binocular, which was perfectly cut apart. You can clearly see the milled parts at the housing as well as two strap lugs. The objective frame and the eyepiece have some brighter color tints: pink and beige. There is a reticle in the rear lens. The diopter scale is marked +5/-5. cxn : no s/n

“Assembled” Forgery
This Dienstglas (“ddx” 6×30, 223757) is an “assembled” forgery. Here is an example of a fake service glass portrayed as a genuine Dienstglas manufactured by the firm of Voigtländer u. Söhne AG, Braunschweig (Brunswick), Lower Saxony, Deutschland (“ddx”). The true manufacturer of this fake military service glass — Meopta – optika, s.r.o. of the Czech Republic — has never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.

“Δ” : 1943 – 1945

Original : Black “rice” body covering, aluminum fittings, black Bakelit (Bakelite) rear lens fittings, left prism cover blank, right prism cover marked “Dienstglas” over “6×30” over “223757” over “ddx” and “+” (cold resistant grease marking, 1942 – 1944), black Trageriemen (carrying strap), black leather Anknöpflasche (button flap).

The modern Meopta prism covers have been replaced by what appear to be genuine World War II “ddx” prism covers to complete the deception.

This Dienstglas (“ddx” 6×30, 223757) should be black. Originally manufactured with a black “rice” body covering, which has since been stripped and removed, the bare metal body was then painted with a modern application of Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint, and intentionally distressed to look deceptively old and well used in active military service.

This Dienstglas (“ddx” 6×30, 223757) is an assembled forgery.

However, this does not appear to be the case with this particular service glass (“ddx” 6×30, 223757).

During World War II, Waffenwerke Brünn (Brno), Prerau (Přerov) plant, Moravia, Czechoslovakia (renamed ‘Opticotechna GmbH, Werk Prerau / Protektorat’ in 1943) — “dow” — never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body. Now, more than 70 years after the end of World War II, Meopta – optika, s.r.o., Kabelikova 1, 750 02 Přerov, Czech Republic, the modern manufacturer of this fake military service glass (“ddx” 6×30, 223757), also has never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.

Original : Black “rice” body covering, aluminum fittings, brown Bakelit (Bakelite) rear lens fittings, left prism cover blank, right prism cover marked “Dienstglas” over “6×30” over “271453” over “ddx.” and “Δ” (cold resistant grease marking, 1943 – 1945), black leather Trageriemen (carrying strap), black leather Anknöpflasche (button flap).

Manipulated Forgery : This Dienstglas (“ddx” 6×30, 271453) should be black.

However, this does not appear to be the case with this particular service glass (“ddx” 6×30, 271453).

In this clearly documented case, the photographic evidence of obvious, blatant modern manipulation emphatically and conclusively hammers the nail of intentional deception firmly into the coffin of stark reality. This Dienstglas (“ddx” 6×30, 271453) is a manipulated forgery.

The original black leather Trageriemen (carrying strap) is no longer included, although the black leather Anknöpflasche (button flap) remains.

Fälschungen
“dow” 11371
“Assembled” Forgery
This Dienstglas (“dow” 6×30, 113710) is an “assembled” forgery. Here is an example of a fake service glass portrayed as a genuine Dienstglas manufactured by the firm of Waffenwerke Brünn (Brno), Prerau (Přerov) plant, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, renamed ‘Opticotechna GmbH, Werk Prerau / Protektorat’ in 1943 (“dow”). Evidently, unknown to the forger, the purported manufacturer (“dow”) never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body. As it turns out, the true manufacturer of this fake military service glass — Meopta – optika, s.r.o. of the Czech Republic — also has never produced any service glasses with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.

Fälschungen “dow” 113710 Fake

Dienstglas (113710) was originally manufactured with a black “Vulkanite” or “rice” body covering, but it is now painted with an unconvincing, “new looking, not quite right” shade of Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint. This particular Dienstglas (“dow” 113710) should be black, but its new Sandgelb color marks it as glaringly out of place, compared with other documented Dienstgläser within its serial number range. The cover up photography screams about things to hide. This Dienstglas (113710) is a fake.

Manufacturer may be Meopta – optika, s.r.o. with WWII prism covers added

It is not known that Waffenwerke Brünn (Brno), Prerau (Přerov) plant, Moravia, Czechoslovakia (renamed ‘Opticotechna GmbH, Werk Prerau / Protektorat’ in 1943) — “dow” — ever produced any Dienstgläser with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body.

Dienstglas (123762) was originally manufactured with a black “rice” body covering, but it is now painted with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body. This particular Dienstglas (“dow” 123762) with “Δ” cold resistant grease mark should be black, but its new Sandgelb color marks it as glaringly out of sequence, compared with other documented Dienstgläser within its serial number range. This Dienstglas (123762) is a fake.

Manufacturer may be Meopta – optika, s.r.o. with WWII prism covers added

Although Sandgelb (sand yellow) paint (einheitsfarbe Europa) was ordered to be used on new optical equipment produced after September 1943, and existing optical equipment was ordered to be repainted with the new sand yellow color, this does not appear to be the case with this particular Dienstglas (123762). Fälschungen “dow” 123763 Δ Fake

Dienstglas (123763) was originally manufactured with a black “rice” body covering, but it is now painted with a Sandgelb (sand yellow) painted body. This particular Dienstglas (“dow” 123763) with “Δ” cold resistant grease mark should be black, but its new Sandgelb color marks it as glaringly out of sequence, compared with other documented Dienstgläser within its serial number range. Also, the carrying strap attachments seen here on the modern Meopta body are straight — very different than the rectangular loops on a genuine Dienstglas. Different also to my eyes are the rear lens fittings — the modern Meopta a bit straighter than the slightly more flared rear lens fittings on a genuine Dienstglas. This Dienstglas (123763) is a fake.

The story : In 1941, in the place where this Dienstglas was found, the area surrendered to the Germans without fighting. From November 1941 to February 1943, the area was under German occupation. Ten kilometers from here, the main event (Battle of Kursk) unfolded, but here two guerrilla groups were operating. Maybe these binoculars were lost during one of the successful guerrilla attacks. The Germans destroyed one of the groups, and the commander was captured just a kilometer from where these binoculars were found, near the bridge over the river. eug : 60885
